Oh horror of horros! I had to take a jab today! I had thought registering with the Leeds Student Medical Practice would just be an administrative type thing, filling out forms, answering questions, but who knew they'd take my blood pressure, make me pee on a little strip and *gasp!* give me an injection! Oh how I trembled and oh how fast my heart was beating! I must say I was terrified. I got there and had to wait for on of their doctors (I hope they are doctors, or at least marginally qualified) to be free. I could not for the life of me remember when I last took my tetanus & polio jabs, since I had forgot to bring my health booklet, but I pray, I hope, that it was no longer than 10 years ago, or I'll have to get a booster! So I was given a flu jab. I think it's a stupid idea, or at least my darling says so. I'd rather depend on my own body's natural defences and immunity than get unnecessary help. I've never had any problems with the flu before. Besides, I heard that many of them who took the jab ended up getting flu within a couple of days. But anyhow, I think I was kind of lucky today, having only to face one needle instead of the actual 2. They ran out of the meningitis C jab (I have to go down on my own to get it done at the health centre.. as if I'll go willingly!), thank goodness! I doubt I could bear being poked by icky, sharp, painful needles, one on each arm! But enough about my fear of jabs...
He had a really cluttered office and also had the covers of the books he's edited framed and hanging on the wall, not to mention a replica of the Magna Carta! (I would consider it the earliest instance of law). I doubt he's prejudiced against Asians. His demeanor towards me was friendly and jovial. I hope I don't get any of those biased lecturers/profs grading my important assignments! I had alot of time to spare after the meeting with my tutor so I went downtown in search of underwear and socks. I also wanted to look at some bathrobes and other nice, cool stuff, but I resisted the urge to spend money on clothes. I should be saving! It was really just alot of walking. I don't think I've ever walked so much in my life! Back and forth, right and left. I know where many of the places are, and the whole orientation of the place because I walk so darn much! Sometimes I don't even know where the bus-stop is, but I know how to walk back to the Uni. The part of Leeds that concerns me, the city centre and its immediate surroundings, is like a self-contained town. The best example I can give is of Holland V (I live in the West in Singapore, so this is most familiar to me) being the city centre (tho' here it's much larger),a nd my residence would be somewhere along Sixth Ave (the Cold Storage Gourmet place), and the university would be located where Jelita is. Everything is within walking distance. It's just a matter of whether or not you want to. My leg muscles are so tense and sore from all that exercise! At 2pm, I went for another one of those intro lectures. This one's more relevant to law tho'. We learnt the basics of the English legal system, the structure of the legal system, etc. I can see why I'll have to do the 1 year Singapore law diploma. Some of the things are not relevant at all! We also learnt about the computers in the school and what resources are available for us to use. I hope to get myself registered as a student here as soon as possible so I can orientate myself with the computers (that way I wouldn't have to go for the computer induction on the 25th of Oct!) I met up with my mum after I had registered with the medical practice (and got jabbed!). Oh, they kept asking if I used contraceptives, and tole me if I needed it, there's a 24hr clinic open and that there is this emergency pill and that birth control thing. Sheesh. I wanted so much to laugh in her face! (But I was nice) Anyhow, I called my dearest before registering too. I miss him so very very much! I can only busy myself hoping that I wouldn't think about it too much and then I wouldn't feel like crying my eyes out. Sigh. My mum & I went grocery shopping at Morrison's. Bought food home (rice too!) and my mum had just made a hearty dinner which we both finished very happily. It consisted of mushy rice (thanks to me saying how there wasn't enough water in the rice steamer), fried egg, 5 chicken wings (the roasted kind, like the ones in Cold Storage, but these are alot hairier!) and corn & chicken soup (my mum added an egg into it, thankfully, or it would have looked like water with bits of chicken and corn floating in it). I'm thinking of eating the chocolate mousse I bought, but I shall save it for tomorrow. I'm getting tired and want to read. I'm more than halfway through "The Queen's Bastard" now. I only have to be in school at 11am tomorrow, so I can sleep in a bit. Not that it matters because I always seem to get up at 8am! P/S: Did you know they have little cosmetic dispensers, much like the coke machines, over here? |
